To travel in this country is to join a large “family” of visitors as well as Egyptians who marvel at the Great Pyramids, the Valley of the Kings, Abu Simbel and many other noted sites of antiquity.
Cairo, with around 18 million people is alive, exciting, noisy day and night, a city that truly never sleeps. The Giza Plateau , only an half hour taxi fare from central Cairo is a highlight. One of the wonders of the world.
To even begin to explore allow at least a week . Time to travel to middle Egypt and visit Luxor, site of the ancient capital Thebes, Karnak Temple, with its towering columns or Luxor temple, still being excavated, immense and exciting, set amongst the modern shops and souks of Luxor.
Across the Nile , the dust shrouded, rose coloured hills of the West Bank hold their ancient secrets. Each day the ferries carry their full loads of tourists to the hot moonscape of the valley of the Kings and Queens. See the beautiful frescoes of Ramses 6th Tomb, so new and vivid in its colours which hid for so long the secret entrance to the Tomb of Tutankhamun. It's a place to return to many times with so much to see. Resting in a paddock near the entrance to the Valley are the two huge Colossi of Memnon standing silently on guard ..
With more time visit Aswan , the resort city on the Cataracts of the Nile. For 100 years the “glitterati” of Europe have sipped coffee and watched the butterfly sails of the graceful wooden feluccas glide past from the balcony of the Old Cataract Hotel.
Fly to Abu Simbel and try to assimilate the fact that the Temples of Ramses II and his Queen Nefertari were once 30 meters down the bank of Lake Nasser and indeed being flooded by the building of the high dam. A fabulous rescue operation by UNESCO.
