Here we find some of the greatest Mediterranean Roman and Greek ancient cities – Sabratha, Cyrene and, above all, Leptis Magna – absolutely the best Roman site on the North African continent.
Tripoli, with its Turkish and Italian influences is a city of elegant facades often called “White Bride of the Mediterranean”. Cosmopolitan, traditional, a charming and busy city, it has an excellent museum with exhibits which include ancient rock carvings from the Sahara to Greek and Roman treasures. For Australians the well preserved WWII sites at Benghazi and Tripoli are a must visit.
Libya's share of the Sahara Desert covers almost 90% of the country. On the desert lays the oasis town of Ghadames of Berber and Touareg Tribes.
