Syria

Greater Syria, cradle of civilisation

Syria - 5,000 years of history. Ancient Mesopotamia, the invention of cuneiform writing, the Hittites and Arameans, the Persians, Alexander the Great, the Roman invasion and the fall of Palmyra, the Crusades, the Ottoman Empire and in modern times the French Mandate. These are a few of the names of events, invaders & empires that have left their mark on Syria.

Visitors today have an endless choice. Damascus, the oldest continually inhabited city, Krak des Chevalier, King Richard's Castle, commanding a hilltop near Damascus. Up the coast see the splendid ruins of the Castle of Saladin and the beautiful Church of St Simeon. Aleppo is crowded, exciting and their souk is the longest in the Middle East. Palmyra, desert city of the splendid Queen Zenobia, the fabled Euphrates River, Deir el Ezzor, Mari, Dura Europos and Resafa. And so much more to see.

Lebanon - was once part of greater Syria. The fabulous temples of Baalbeck are just over the border. Visit Tripoli and Byblos to see the Crusader Castles and the Cedars.
